Idris Elba fans have long been pushing the British actor to play the next James Bond, and 007 producers would agree he would be awesome. Still, Elba supporters should try not to get their hopes up too much.
In an interview with Variety Posted Wednesday 007 Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have explained who, exactly, should be next to take on the role now that Daniel Craig has hung up his Bond costume. Wilson revealed he thought Elba was “awesome”, and Broccoli backed that up, adding: “We love Idris”.
But, she continued, whoever accepts the role must agree to a long-term commitment.
“The thing is, it’s going to take a few years,” Broccoli said. Variety. “And when we cast Bond, it’s a 10, 12 year commitment. So he’s probably like, ‘Do I really want this stuff? Not everyone wants to do that. [Daniel Craig to do it].”
Wilson added, “And he was in his early thirties at the time!”
Daniel Craig was actually 38 when his stint as Bond began in 2006 Casino Royale. Roger Moore, meanwhile, starred in the legendary role from age 45 to 57.
The idea that 50-year-old Elba, who would be the first Black James Bond, is too old for the role has received backlash.
“Idris Elba is ‘too old’ to play Bond, but he’s still 15 years younger than Daniel Craig,” one social media user said. wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.
Still, some seemed to agree that Elba missed his window.
“As much as I love Idris Elba, the idea of him becoming the next James Bond is silly,” one person said. tweeted. “He’s 50. It takes about 3/4 years to produce a Bond movie, so by the time he’s done 2 he’d be older than Roger Moore when he retired. That’s a good idea , but think again.”
Still, others are crossing their fingers. On Tuesday, another Twitter user posted a photo of Elba in costume and holding a Bond-esque gun.
“For all the snowflakes losing their minds over a black mermaid, here’s the new James Bond,” user written in the tweethas since gone viral.
Another Bond fan further explained why they think Elba “would make a great 007”.
“He’s British, handsome and a damn good actor. Go ahead,” they continued in the tweet. “I would not only love to see, but can’t wait to add his Bond films to my already comprehensive Bond collection.”
Calls for Elbe to play Bond have been mounting for several years, but so has resistance to the idea. In 2015, the author of the novel Bond Mortis Trigger said he considered Elba to be “too rough” and “a bit too ‘streety'” for the role, but insisted it was not a “color issue”. buzz flow reported at the time.
Some Bond enthusiasts have also demanded that the franchise branch out to include a woman as the titular character. The Bond actors themselves, however, remain divided.
no time to die actress Ana de Armas told The sun this summer that there is “no need for a Bond woman”. Co-star Lashana Lynch disagreed, saying The gardians last year that Bond could be “male or female”.
Anyway, Elba doesn’t even seem to want the gig. On an episode of the shop podcast, he revealed that Bond just wasn’t in the cards for him.
“It’s not a goal for my career. I don’t think playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals,” he said in the episode that streamed on Spotify earlier this month. “It will certainly satisfy the will of a nation. I’m not going to lie, every corner of the world I go to, and I talk about different cultures, they always go ‘Bond’. And I feel like it’s beyond me at this crossroads.
“It’s not a question of, should I, should I, will I,” Elba continued. “That’s what the will of the nation sometimes dictates.”
