In the United States, we are only hours away from the start of the Thanksgiving holiday. If you have some shopping to do before cooking your family’s traditional feast, your options will be more limited if you wait until Thursday to get your ingredients.
Two of the country’s largest food retailers, Walmart and Target, are closed for Thanksgiving. Kroger, however, keeps its doors open until at least mid-afternoon on Thanksgiving.
Walmart used to be one of the major retailers that always stayed open on Thanksgiving. But the chain reversed course from 2020, as Heavy reported at the time.
For the third year in a row, Walmart is closed on Thanksgiving. On the website’s homepage, Walmart reminded customers that they can still shop online for Black Friday deals while stores are closed.
In a 2021 press release, business leaders emphasized the importance of rewarding their employees with a holiday: “Closing our stores on Thanksgiving Day is one way we say ‘thank you’ to our teams for their dedication and hard work this year. . We hope everyone will take the opportunity to be with their loved ones during what is always a special time.”
While not classified as a grocery store, Walmart is the top-selling food retailer in the United States, according to Progressive Grocer.
If you need last-minute shopping, be sure to get to Target before Thursday. All Target locations are closed on Thanksgiving Day.
Company executives announced in 2021 that this holiday schedule would become the new standard every year.
CEO Brian Cornell announced last year, “I’m making it official: We’re going to keep our stores closed on future Thanksgivings as well. What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard – one that recognizes our ability to accommodate our guests’ holiday needs both within and well beyond retail hours. You don’t have to wonder if this is the last Thanksgiving you’ll spend with family and friends for a while, because Thanksgiving shopping hours are something we won’t be returning to once the pandemic is finally over.”
Kroger stores are typically open until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., but on Thanksgiving, all stores close earlier than usual. Shoppers can expect Kroger stores to close between 3 and 5 p.m. Thursday, depending on the region. However, most pharmacies are closed during the holidays.
