Actor Michael Callan is dead

Los Angeles from the effects of pneumonia. This was announced by his daughter Rebecca Goodman to the industry magazine “The Hollywood Reporter”.

Michael Callan has been in show business for over 50 years and has appeared in front of the camera for more than 90 film and television productions. His turning point came in the 1950s with the famous Broadway comedy West Side Story, in which he played Riff, the leader of the street gang of the Jets. The musical was first filmed in 1961, but actor Russ Tamblyn played the part of Callan.

However, Michael Callan has caught on in Hollywood. After about a year on Broadway, Columbia Pictures film studio signed a multi-year contract with him. The actor began his film career in 1959 with the western “They Came to Cordura” opposite Gary Cooper and Rita Hayworth. Only a year later he was nominated for a Golden Globe for “The Flying Fontaines” and finally received the award in 1961 for “Best Newcomer of the Year” for his role in the film “Because They Are Young”.

Another hit movie with Callan was released in 1965: “Cat Ballou”, a western comedy with Jane Fonda. From 1966, the American then played the leading role in the American sitcom “Occasional Wife”. Later in his career, Callan worked more and more as a producer, his last appearance on camera was in the 2006 film The Still Life.

Michael Callan has been married three times, most recently to fellow actress Karen Malouf from 1975 to 1985. He is survived by his two adult daughters, Dawn and Rebecca, from his first marriage to Carlyn Chapman.
