A new statute for the Fondation du Grand Théâtre de Genève

The executive of the city of Geneva approved the new statute of the Fondation du Grand Théâtre de Genève (FGTG) on Wednesday. This revision aims to clarify the governance of the institution. It must be validated by the municipal council, then the canton decides.

The FGTG remains an autonomous foundation under public law, the city of Geneva announced. The community board will no longer be able to sit on the board of trustees as a supervisory body, the size of which will be reduced from fourteen to nine members. The new statute simplifies the financial approval mechanisms and provides for a more systematic follow-up within the framework of urban funding.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the commitment of the members of the management and the managers of the institution. The revision must also allow the FGTG to become the sole employer of all the Grand Théâtre staff, while some are employed by the City of Geneva, which entails administrative problems and unequal treatment denounced by the Court of Auditors.

The new statute lays a clear basis for future negotiations between the social partners with a view to standardizing staff statutes, notes the City of Geneva. The “acquired rights” of the municipal staff remain in place for a period to be determined by the future staff regulations of the FGTG.

When asked by the Tribune de Genève, the administrative advisor responsible for culture, Sami Kanaan, points out that the consequences of a change of personnel from the city to the FGTG as well as the consequences of municipalization are being studied. “But I am convinced that this option is not realistic,” he says.

According to the magistrate, it is not about worsening working conditions or saving money. “If you look at it, no other autonomous performing arts institution employs city staff,” he explains, citing the New Comedy, the Saint-Gervais Theater and the Dance Pavilion as examples.
