Call for more civil service salary – warning strikes likely

Verdi and the association of civil servants are asking for more salaries. Federal and local employees should receive at least 500 euros per month.

The Verdi union and the association of civil servants dbb ask for 10.5 percent more income for federal and municipal employees – but at least 500

euro per month. According to information from the German news agency and the Reuters news agency on Tuesday, this is a central component of the package of demands for the upcoming collective bargaining for the public sector. About 2.5 million municipal and federal employees will be negotiated early next year.

Unions justify wage demand, inter alia, with high inflation. “Employees should be assured that they will not have to accept a real wage loss,” said dbb head Ulrich Silberbach. Verdi boss Frank Werneke stressed that in addition to inflation compensation, a strong emphasis should be placed on the lowest wage brackets. “In determining the demand, even a small amount will certainly play an important role,” Werneke told dpa.

The Association of Municipal Employers’ Associations (VKA) had already called for a containment of wages. Municipalities are under enormous financial pressure. Many municipalities have significant old debts. The municipalities’ investment portfolio amounts to approximately € 159 billion.

Warning shots are considered likely given the different positions. For example, childcare workers or bus drivers could leave as part of the wage dispute in the winter, as was the case in previous bargaining rounds.
